Vic: Nixon reneges on promise to probe access to MPs' files

Victoria Police chief commissioner CHRISTINE NIXON has reneged on a commitment to checkwhether police files on Liberal Party MPs and candidates were inappropriately accessed.

State Opposition Leader ROBERT DOYLE asked for the checks after revelations that fileson two candidates - one Liberal and one independent - were accessed in the lead-up tothe last state election.

Ms NIXON initially agreed to the request, but today she's announced the checks willonly be done for five MPs from each political party.

She says she's received requests from the National Party and Labor for similar checks, and such an extensive audit of the police database would be a waste of resources.

Mr DOYLE says he won't accept the decision, insisting a full investigation must becarried out because the integrity of the police force is at stake.

A spokesman for Police Minister ANDRE HAERMEYER says the minister agrees with Ms NIXON'sdecision.
